480 in Gravesend

Arriva 3913 on the 480 at Gravesend Station. Gravesend was a border town between,  London Transport Country Buses, and Maidstone & District. Now it is Arriva, Kent Thamesside territory. The 480 was a main trunk route serving the industrial area  between Gravesend and Erith. In the 1960s it was served using RML buses. Now the 180 only goes between Gravesend and Dartford, most of the industry has gone. The 480 is paralleled by the 490 all the way except that the 490 calls at Bluewater shopping complex.

Arriva 3273, in Bluewater Shuttle livery on route 480 in New Road, Gravesend. The Bluewater shopping complex is built in a disused chalk quarry. There were many such quarries in the area used to manufacture cement a mainstay of the area. Most of the area between Gravesend and Greenhithe was covered in a white film of cement dust.
