McLeod Road

A tram in McLeod Road not far from Bostal Gardens, seen in the background. The Methodist church can just about be seen behind the trees. Taken on the last day of tram operation Saturday 5 July 1952.

Many thanks to Roy Wilkinson for sending the tram photographs taken by his mother.

Here is RT1837 (KYY 692)from BX on route 229 in McLeod Road, Abbey Wood. Even in those days parking at bus stops was a problem, even when few other cars were parked on the road. It was a long way to Orpington from here, and Woolwich was not left long behind.

The 229 no longer traverses this road to Woolwich, It turn off at Abbey Wood station and heads for Thamesmead instead. The other bus which came this way the 177 now goes from Thamesmead via Abbey Estate, leaving the 180 which has been diverted along here.

Another photograph of the same bus in the same place picking up passengers at the stop. Probably a 177 coming up in the distance.

Seen in the same place as the other tram from the other side of the road. This is an ex West Ham car, and due to the narrow advertisement panel between decks they could not carry the last week posters. The prefabs were replaced by maisonettes.

Still to be seen in McLeod Road is this old inspection cover for the electricity supply for the trams. It is inscribed with London County Council Tramways, and the makers name Reid Brothers London.
